The Dillon County courthouse dominates downtown Dillon with its Beaux Arts architecture. Completed in 1911, the Dillon County courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Page’s Millpond

Page’s Mill Pond is a majestic look at the rustic past and simple country scenery found in Dillon County. The mill house was built in 1935 to replace the original built in 1792. It is located on the northern end of main street in Lake View, and greets folks driving into Lake View on Highway 41 from North Carolina. The mill house stands proudly on Page’s Millpond, the namesake for the town of ‘Lake View’.

This picture taken by Joan Beth Page of Lake View was captured on a cold day in January 2004.

Joan writes: “This is a rare photograph for our little town because we hardly ever get snow or an ice storm. The millhouse is also featured in the book America 24-7.”

Dillon Town Clock

The Dillon town clock is located just in front of the Amtrak train station right off Main Street.

The historical marker reads: “Florence Railroad Company – In 1882 the Florence Railroad Company was chartered and authorized to build and operate a line east of Florence northward to the state border. Right-of-way problems here were solved when J.W. Dillon and his son Thomas offered half-interest in 63 acres if the railroad would use the land, build a depot, and lay out a town. The offer was accepted and the railroad from Pee Dee to the state line was opened in 1888.”

Edwin writes: ” The park-like setting is a memorial to the former and future mayors of Dillon and was completed in May of 2004. If you look closely at the top of the clock you can see the town name inscribed.”

Page’s Millpond Boathouse

This picture taken in Lake View shows the mill house on Page’s Millpond. The mill house was built in 1935 to replace the original built in 1792. It is located on the northern end of main street in Lake View, and greets folks driving into Lake View on Highway 41 from North Carolina.

Page’s Millpond is the namesake for the town of ‘Lake View’. The pond is a 238-acre cypress pond with a beautiful spillway. Fishing is allowable only through membership, but photographing is allowed from the shore.

Latta Photos

Like Dillon, Latta was founded in 1888, when railroads were built all over South Carolina. It was named in honor of Robert J. Latta, who surveyed the right-of-way for the new railroad. Today, Latta is a delightful small town of around 1,500 in Dillon County, which borders North Carolina in the northeastern part of our state.

Blenheim’s Ginger Ale

Blenheim’s Ginger Ale is a South Carolina icon. It was invented in 1903 in the town of Blenheim by Dr. C. R. May to help his patients drink the local medicinal spring waters.

Bought in 1993 by the Schafer family, Blenheim’s is now made and bottled in a modern plant next to the South of the Border entertainment complex. There are three variants of Blenheim’s Ginger Ale: Hot (pink cap), Not As Hot (gold cap), and Diet (white cap). All are spicy enough for most, so consider yourself warned!

South of the Border

Note: See Time Magazine‘s article about South of the Border where it was voted one of the top 50 roadside attractions in America!

The famed South of the Border entertainment complex is located in Hamer, South Carolina, just off I-95 and a stone’s throw away from the North-South Carolina state line. Founded as little more than a beer stand in 1949 by Alan Schafer, South of the Border eventually grew into a large park. The “Mexican” theme originated when Schafer started selling Mexican trinkets after returning from a trip to Mexico. Read the Dillon County article of SCIWAY News, October 2008 issue.
