Let photographer Steven Taylor introduce you to Wiggins, South Carolina. He writes, “I love to drive down the country roads and explore, finding that special place. Wiggins was something of a mystery to me.”

“I remember when I was 18 driving down the road to Wiggins and never making it to the end as I turned around and headed back to SC Highway 26 . Now I am 32 and felt it was time to conquer this feat. I went to the end to see what was there and this old build stood. Not sure the story behind it but I thought it had some special southern charm you can’t find any where else!”

Do you know a story about Wiggins or this building in particular? If you do, please send it to the South Carolina Picture Project so we can help Steven solve this mystery. Thank you!

Completed in 1915, this 133-foot tower provides the city with 100,000 gallons of water — it also serves as one of Colleton County‘s most interesting landmarks. This tower, the Belton Standpipe in Anderson County, and the standpipe in Allendale are the only standpipe towers in the state. The lower portion of the tower was used as the city’s jail for a short time in the early 1900s. Later, the jail cells were offered to stranded travelers in need of a place to stay for the night.

The water tower is included in the Walterboro Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
