Edisto Beach – Edisto Beach, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Colleton County Photos  |  Edisto Beach

Edisto Beach lies at the tip of Edisto Island, just over Scott Creek. An incorporated town, it is separate from Edisto Island and located in Colleton County instead of Charleston County. Located about 50 miles south of historic Charleston, it is one of few relatively undeveloped beaches in South Carolina.

Edisto is named for its first known inhabitants, the Edisto Indians. Today the coastal community features beach homes, vacation rentals, and a state park.

Edisto Beach State Park is located on the northernmost tip of the beach, just south of Botany Bay. The park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid 1930s and was one of the first state parks constructed in South Carolina.

Tidal creeks ribbon through the island, giving beach lovers another experience of the waters at Edisto. Photographer Christian Stewart, who took the above photo, says that this creek runs behind the beach house where he spent some time during the summer of 2015.

Reflections on Edisto Beach

Marty Peterson of Green Mountain, North Carolina – who contributed the photo at the top of this page, – writes, “My family has been going to Edisto Island for 18 years. When we first started we were looking for a place we could take our two young sons to the beach for vacation. Some friends invited us to go there with them. We fell in love with Edisto Island and have been going there ever since. My sons are grown now, but my wife and I still try to go even year around our anniversary. This year was a little different. While I was there last year I found an interest in photography as a hobby. This year I couldn’t wait to get there. I saw places and things I had never seen in the 18 years we had been going. I even made the trip to Botany Bay. It’s an amazing place. I love it. Can’t wait until our next trip there. South Carolina is a beautiful state. A place where memories are made.”
