Edisto Beach – Edisto Beach, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Colleton County Photos  |  Edisto Beach

Edisto Beach lies at the tip of Edisto Island, just over Scott Creek. An incorporated town, it is separate from Edisto Island and located in Colleton County instead of Charleston County. Located about 50 miles south of historic Charleston, it is one of few relatively undeveloped beaches in South Carolina.

Edisto is named for its first known inhabitants, the Edisto Indians. Today the coastal community features beach homes, vacation rentals, and a state park.

Edisto Beach State Park is located on the northernmost tip of the beach, just south of Botany Bay. The park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid 1930s and was one of the first state parks constructed in South Carolina.

Tidal creeks ribbon through the island, giving beach lovers another experience of the waters at Edisto. Photographer Christian Stewart, who took the above photo, says that this creek runs behind the beach house where he spent some time during the summer of 2015.
