The Washout – Folly Beach, South Carolina

South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Charleston County Photos  |  The Washout

The Washout on the eastern side of Folly Beach got its name when Hurricane Hugo “washed out” several homes and much of the nearby land during a massive 1989 storm. Today, these alterations allow the wind to create some of the best surf conditions on the east coast.

Also referred to as “Hollywood” by locals, the Washout is a surf mecca that is populated by beachgoers year round. Several surf competitions host their events at the Washout, including the renowned Wahine Contest held in May of each year.

Reflections on the Washout

Ben Sumrell of Awendaw took this photo in August of 2013, just prior to the Junior Surfing Championships. He calls it “Sunrise on the Edge of America.”
