The Sustainability Institute in North Charleston provides workshops, information, and the know-how to make existing homes more energy-efficient. Their model Green House on East Montague features many examples of green renovation.
From rain barrels for rainwater collection to Energy Star rated appliances and improved insulation, the Sustainability Institute’s Green House has cut its utility costs by more than half. Renovated in 2007, the Green House started life as a typical Lowcountry home. Careful work has made this building one of the most energy-efficient in Charleston.

Hi Brenda! Welcome to South Carolina! A great place to get started would be our Green Building Guide – It has a lot of information about sustainable businesses in our state. Good Luck!

I purchased a small home in Charleston and am interested in installing solar water heat, and space heating and cooling. Have no idea where to begin. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
