COAST Brewing in North Charleston uses organic malt barley in all its recipes. Before being used in the brewing of the beer, the malted barley is milled and mashed to produce wort, which contains the sugars necessary for fermentation. Once the sugars have been extracted from the malted barley, the spent mash is given to a Johns Island farm to be used as animal feed. Thus, nothing is wasted.
