Boneyard Beach

This image is copyrighted. You may not use it without written consent.

Shown here is Cape Romain‘s renowned Boneyard Beach. The beach is located on Bulls Island, which is the largest island in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

Boneyard Beach gets its name from the fallen trees and eroded roots that decorate its shore. Most of the trees were live oaks; they have been bleached by time, salt, and sun.

On Bulls Island, you will also find maritime forests, salt marshes, and an expansive beach. Deer roam its 5,496 acres, along with alligators, raccoons, and squirrels.

Even though the bleached oaks are fascinating to look at, birds are actually the biggest draw for visitors; there are over 277 different species found on or near the island.

Many thanks to Pamela Bohnenstiehl of Goose Creek, who took this picture in February 2012.
