Abandoned House

This image is copyrighted. You may not use it without written consent.

This house is located off of Highway 17 between Awendaw and Mount Pleasant.

Even though this particular house is abandoned, it reminds us that approximately 12 percent of the population in rural Awendaw live below the poverty line. (Read more about SC poverty statistics.)

The median price of homes has grown considerably since 2003, when the average price was around $180,000. Between 2005 and 2008, the median price saw highs of $300,000, $600,000, and even a spike in the third quarter of 2004 of $930,000.

A public water system is currently being built but is at the center of intense controversy among Awendaw residents. Some citizens want access to clean, affordable water. Others fear that easier access to water will make their rural town more inviting to developers.

Some say the new development will bring great amenities. Others think that it will ruin the town’s rustic charm, while driving current residents from their homes who can’t afford rising property taxes.

Rustic charm? What that means in my town is that there are lots of old dumpy apartment buildings (from the times of the Old West) that have never been upgraded. It's embarrassing and demeaning to have to say you live in one of them.

I would love to have locations of abandoned old homes in Laurens county. I love to take pictures as a hobby. I moved to Clinton last November and have fun riding around with my dog looking for historical homes.

I’m making a movie for my senior project and need to use a house to film in. This house is perfect, and I would love to film there. I also have connections through family in Hollywood, and if this movie is good enough I will be able to make it on a larger scale. Please contact me back the exact address. I would love to film here. Thank you.

My great-grandparents Arthur & Anna C Hodge lived in Awendaw in the 1890 – not sure what date they started living there. I would like to know if this house could of once been theirs or any of the other Hodge family members.

Hi Cindy! This house is located directly off of Highway 17 heading towards Awendaw from Mount Pleasant. It is in between these two cities, and it will be on the right side of the road. Hope this helps! – SCIWAY
