This tablet located at the Old Sheldon Church reads: “Church of Prince William’s Parish, known as Sheldon built between 1745-1755.Burned by the British Army 1779. Rebuilt 1826. Burned by the Federal Army 1865. Tablet placed by Columbia Committee South Carolina Society Colonial Dames of America 1937.”

Saw this to my surprise while riding motorcycle and taking this road from U.S. 17 to Yemassee. Although growing up in nearby Georgia I had not known of this colonial treasure and will be back to see it. Construction was begun in the year my revolutionary soldier ancestor was born in N.C. That gentleman moved to Georgia about the time Sheldon church was burned by the British, so it’s something of a touchstone for me.
