South Carolina  |  SC Picture Project  |  Barnwell County Photos  |  Mathis House

Charles Mathis built this home in Blackville in 1889. Mathis, a successful planter, was known for experimenting with horticulture. He is credited with bringing cantaloupes to South Carolina. The home’s brick cellar is thought to have been used to store Mathis’s harvests and other perishables.
