The "face jug" is a traditional folk art form in which jugs and vessels are decorated with the image of a face. American face jugs were first created by slave potters in the Edgefield area of South Carolina during the early- to mid-1800s. This large jug was crafted by Stephen Ferrell of Old Edgefield Pottery. The eyes and teeth were made using a pure kaolin clay that will stand in further contrast after firing.
