Chunks of kaolin sit on the floor of the potter's studio. Kaolin deposits are plentiful in the Edgefield area, found along the geographical belt that extends from Chesterfield to Aiken County, and across our borders into North Carolina and Georgia.

Interestingly, the South Carolina nickname "Sandlapper" also comes from kaolin.
