Walhalla, South Carolina – Stumphouse Tunnel
|
In this photograph, a person emerges from the depths of the Stumphouse Tunnel to the light outside. This shot was taken in fall 2005 by Brian W. Lackore.
Stumphouse Tunnel was designed as a railroad tunnel and built by Irish immigrants before the Civil War. It was never finished. At one point, Clemson University used the cool and moist atmosphere of the tunnel to store its blue cheese production. It is not far from the town of Walhalla, in Oconee County.
For more info on the Stumphouse Tunnel, visit Walhalla's Stumphouse Tunnel information page. Another great resource on the park and its surroundings is located at OconeeCountry.com.
