The palmetto is South Carolina's "State Tree" and perhaps its most beloved symbol, serving as the centerpiece of our flag. As far as trees go though, South Carolina has more than its fair share of beauty. From pine forests to cypress swamps, and from quirky topiaries to stately oaks, a wide variety of species thrive in our state's soil. We even have 14 national champion trees – meaning they are the largest of their species anywhere in the United States!
