Located in Kingstree and built in 1823, the Williamsburg County Courthouse was designed by native Charlestonian Robert Mills. A renowned architect, Mills also designed the Washington Monument, as well as 15 other courthouses in South Carolina. (Some sources say Mills may have been responsible for as many as 17 other courthouses in our state.)
Mills strove to construct fireproof buildings – an important consideration in his time. The safeguards he set in place served the citizens of Williamsburg County well when in 1883, the second floor of the courthouse caught fire. The masonry-vaulted construction with 30-inch walls withstood the blaze, however, and county records were spared.
The courthouse was remodeled between 1953 and 1954. A rear wing was added at that time, as well as the double staircase across the front.
