This dugout canoe serves as the centerpiece of the Williamsburgh Historical Society Museum in Kingstree. It was carved from a single cypress tree and is 20 feet long. The oars are so heavy one can barely lift them, and the idea of using them to propel through water is difficult to imagine!
In the second half of the twentieth century, many families would pile into their cars after church for a "Sunday drive." In the nineteenth century, however, some families took canoe rides instead! At the Williamsburgh Museum, you can see a photo of ladies dressed up in their Sunday finest – complete with full-length gowns and parasols – meandering through the swamp aboard just such a vessel.
Of course, dugout canoes have served people throughout time for purposes far more utilitarian. Click here to learn more about South Carolina's rich history of dugout canoes.
