Main Street is the central corridor through Kingstree's Historic District, which includes 48 buildings and – automobiles aside – appears today very much as it did one hundred years ago. The district has been listed in the National Register since 1982.
Kingstree enjoyed significant prosperity during the first two decades of the twentieth century thanks to an agrarian economy based on tobacco. As noted by the historical research group that compiled information for the National Register, "By 1918, the Kingstree tobacco market had become one of the largest in the state and in that year seven and one-half million pounds were marketed in the city."
