Wilson Jumper of West Columbia took this picture of our State Capitol building, which is located in Columbia.
Originally, South Carolina’s first State House was located in Charleston on the corner of Broad and Meeting streets. However, as settlements grew farther inland, a number of South Carolinians asked to move the State House to a more central location. In 1786, a compromise was reached and land along the Congaree River, which belonged to Colonel Thomas Taylor, was chosen as the new capital city.
The new capital city was named Columbia, and it was decided that the State House should be located on a hill that was one of the most prominent points in the area.
Completion of the South Carolina State House took 56 years. The cost of the building exceeded $3,450,000 and it weighs more than 70,000 tons. It is constructed of native granite, most of which came from a quarry two miles from the site.
