The Santee Indian mound is one of many known prehistoric Indian mounds in South Carolina. The Indian mound was built sometime between 1200-1500 AD, and was a ceremonial and burial spot for the local Santee Indians.

British forces built Fort Watson upon the Santee Indian mound during the American Revolution. "Swamp Fox" Gen Francis Marion and Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee along with their troops attacked the fort in 1780 and forced them to surrender by building a large tower throughout the night, and showering the British troops with lead.
Even though there are no remnants of Fort Watson here, the site is listed on the National Historic Register and there is a great observation point at the top of the mound which has fantastic views.
