The Redcliffe Plantation in Beech Island was once the home of former US Congressman and Governor of South Carolina, James Henry Hammond (1807-1864). This photo was taken by Michael Stroud of Bluffton in July 2008.
Four generations of Hammonds have occupied this 1859 Greek-revival mansion. The Governor's great grandson, John Shaw Billings (1898-1975), former managing editor of Time and Life magazines, brought the Redcliffe mansion back to life in the 1930s. Today Redcliffe Plantation is managed by South Carolina State Park Service.
