This photo of Memorial Plaza in Orangeburg presents a juxtaposition of familiar South Carolina images. The photo was submitted by Leigh Joyner of Orangeburg. It was taken in December 2006.
Leigh writes: "In the heart of Orangeburg County, as well as the city of Orangeburg, is Memorial Plaza, where history and culture are commemorated. Pictured here is a confederate soldier monument erected in 1893 using granite from Winnsboro, SC. The white church building in the background is St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the first Methodist church in Orangeburg. The building pictured here was built in 1898. Memorial Plaza is at the corner of Russell Street and Middleton Street."
