The granite stone featured in this image was likely quarried in a local Fairfield County mine. This well-preserved example of a stepping stone - called a "mounting block" - was used to assist ladies in entering a horse-drawn carriage or buggy. Victorian-era dresses were long and cumbersome, making the ascent somewhat indelicate. The mounting block is located on the back lawn of the Robert Charleton Thomas house.
