Philanthropist and thoroughbred breeder Marion duPont Scott (1894-1983) started the Colonial Cup in 1971 as our country's first $100,000 steeplechase. Passionate about horses and racing, she is often referred to as the "First Lady of Horse Racing." She was the granddaughter of the founder of Dupont. Before her death in 1983, she donated the 500-acre Springdale Race Course to the State of South Carolina. Camden's equine tradition owes a lot to the generosity and passion of Marion duPont Scott.
