Columbia, South Carolina – African-American Monument
|
This detail of the African-American Monument on the SC State House grounds was taken by Karin Salmon of Columbia in April 2008.
She writes: "I wanted to capture an inspiring image of the African-American monument on the State House grounds. The faces of the men and women truly display the spirit of Emancipation."
The African-American Monument was dedicated in March 2001 and was sculpted by Ed Wright. The $1.1 million required to build it was all raised privately. The monument includes twelve panels chronicling the history and experiences of African-Americans in South Carolina.
