Ralph Preston of Franklin, North Carolina took this picture of the Morris Island lighthouse in January 2009.
Ralph writes: "I found a Palmetto log to sit on with the grass, water, shoals, and the lighthouse right in front of me and just had to wait for a pelican. It's a beautiful place. The picture was taken just as the light started changing."
Morris Island is located just south of the entrance to Charleston harbor, and is one of many barrier islands guarding the South Carolina coast.
The lighthouse is a treasure to local citizens who seek to preserve it from the harsh effects of the wind and sea. Learn how you can help save the Morris Island lighthouse.
