This photo of the Pineapple Fountain in the Waterfront Park was taken by Alan Tobey while vacationing in Charleston in 2007. He and his wife were captivated by Charleston's “culture, charm, and interesting architecture.”

Alan had this to say about capturing the photo: "I've learned that the best landscape-type photos are taken
in the 'hour of good light' around dawn and sunset. So I spent several mornings watching the sun come up over the city, looking for ways to capture it. The pineapple fountain was an obvious target; the soft light kept the contrasts down, and using a fast shutter speed to freeze the flow worked better than shooting slower for the
streams of water."
Alan tells us that due to California's persistent drought conditions, their own civic fountain hasn't functioned in years.
Pineapple motifs are common in Charleston and represent hospitality. The fountain is a focal point of Charleston's Waterfront Park. The park's eight acres face the Charleston Harbor. It also features a larger splash fountain, where children play during hot Lowcountry summers.
Another highlight of the Waterfront Park is its long pier, where residents and visitors can walk, fish, picnic, or swing.
