North Charleston Elementary School is one of a handful of schools in South Carolina to achieve LEED certification.
Designed as a green building, the school uses natural light, cutting back on energy needs. The bathrooms use low-flow fixtures, reducing water consumption. The HVAC system takes advantage of lower electricity rates at night to freeze blocks of ice that cool the building during the day. The exterior landscaping uses native plants to reduce watering needs, again cutting back on the amount of resources needed to run the school. Even the bricks were recycled from the old building. Finally, low-VOC paints, adhesives, and furniture are contributing to a much healthier indoor air quality – an important concern with young children.
The innovations allow the elementary school to save money on operation and upkeep.
