This is the Morris Island lighthouse in a dramatic shot taken in June 2006 by Jim Whorley of Charlottesville, Virginia. Jim took this photo the day after Tropical Storm Alberto grazed the coast of South Carolina.
Jim writes: "This was my first trip to Folly Beach. After many years of vacationing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina we wanted to visit a sea shore environment that was more attuned to nature, and we found it at Folly Beach. The lighthouse is a dramatic sentinel for Charleston and the Lowcountry."
