Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina – Hunting Island Light
|
In this photograph, the Hunting Island lighthouse rises above the pines to capture the last light of Christmas Eve 2005. This photo was taken by Michele Hoeft of Beaufort.
The current lighthouse started service in 1875, after the original lighthouse, built in 1859, was burned during the Civil War. The Hunting Island lighthouse is the only lighthouse in South Carolina that people can climb to the top of. Source: Lighthouse Friends.
The Hunting Island Light is located in Hunting Island State Park, which is in Beaufort County, 18 miles from the city of Beaufort on US 21. To learn more, visit SCIway's guide to Hunting Island State Park.
