Live oak trees are called "live" since they remain green during winter months. They can be found mostly in North America, up and down the East Coast from Maryland to Florida. They can also be found in certain parts of California and Oregon, as well as along the Gulf Coast in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. They can even grow in the warmer regions of Asia and Europe.

The marker for the South Carolina Champion Oak reads:
"The live oak between houses 513 and 515 Prince Street is registered with The American Forestry Associates as a State Champion – South Carolina. In 1940 the tree was estimated to be over 500 years old and it measured 23 feet in circumference, 120 feet tall, with a crown spread of 125 feet."
