Lamar Nix of Seabrook (near Beaufort) took this photo at Palmetto Bluff in September 2007.
Lamar writes: "During the warm months freshwater ponds in coastal South Carolina are frequently host to a small, green aquatic plant known as 'duckweed.' The duckweed may cover the entire surface of the pond as is the case in this particular locale at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton. These two wood ducks were initially swimming in the duckweed but were apparently alarmed by an alligator lurking nearby, and climbed up on this oak limb where they felt more secure. The low angle and directional light just after sunrise provided the perfect illumination for this scene, entitled Gator Watch."
