Retired US Congressman Arthur Ravenel Jr and many other local leaders began having concerns about the structural health of the original Cooper River Bridges, which were built in the early 1900s. For 20 years, Ravenel worked to gather funding to build a newer, larger, and safer bridge over the Cooper River. Finally, construction began in 2001 on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, and in 2005 the Lowcountry celebrated its grand opening in style with a magnificent fireworks display.
Since 1978, people from all over the world descend upon Charleston and Mount Pleasant each spring to participate in the famous Cooper River Bridge Run. The 10-K walk/run is for people of all ages and abilities to join together and celebrate healthy living, camaraderie, and the beautiful Cooper River.
David Vanover of Boiling Springs, who took this picture in March 2009, says that the walking path across the bridge "offers amazing views of the Cooper River, the Charleston Harbor, and downtown Charleston."
