Bulls Island is the largest of four barrier islands found in Cape Romain. On it you will find maritime forests, salt marshes, and an expansive beach. Deer roam the 5,496 acres along with alligators, raccoons, and squirrels. However, birds are the biggest draw for visitors; there are over 277 different species found on or near the island.
This picture was taken by Barry Gooch of Charleston while he was visiting the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge, established in 1932, encompasses a 22-mile segment of the southeast Atlantic coast and includes barrier islands, salt marshes, beaches, fresh and brackish water impoundments, and a maritime forest.
