We haven't found any stories (yet!) about this boat, and it would be interesting to know how such a large boat ended up on the banks of this small creek.

What we do know is the area suffered greatly from Hurricane Hugo on September 22, 1989. The eye of the storm passed over Sullivan's Island, just north of the Charleston peninsula, leaving the strongest of the Category 4 winds to smack Awendaw and McClellanville.
Awendaw was not a town at the time. The catastrophe drove forward its township, so the residents could have a more unified voice for the relief effort and for any future crises. After three efforts to rally the public together, Awendaw became a town in 1992.
