The church was consecrated in July 1857. Spared by Federal troops, who burned most of Bluffton in 1863, it was damaged by a deadly hurricane in 1898. The repairs were completed in February 1900.
The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Today, the Church of the Cross participates in Bluffton events, such as the Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival.
