Folly Beach Hotels: A Local's GuideFolly Beach is located about 15 miles south of downtown Charleston, via Folly Road on James Island. Along with Sullivan's Island, it's the closest beach to historic Charleston. (Sullivan's Island and its neighboring beach, Isle of Palms, are both located north of Charleston, via Mount Pleasant.)
Despite its proximity, depending on the day and time, it can take quite awhile to get to Folly from downtown. If you are visiting Folly on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer, you need to head out before noon unless you want to sit in traffic for an hour or more. Of course, if you have access to a bicycle and are up for a few bridges, that may be the best way to travel. Folly Road is slowly getting an uninterrupted bike lane, and it's fun to leave gas-guzzlers in the dust!
