Jim Gillgam contributed the battle information below and wrote of South Carolina's roll in the Mexican War, "The state of South Carolina raised a Regiment of volunteers for the Mexican War 1846-48. The name of the regiment was the Palmetto Regiment. They fought very bravely and were the Vanguard of Winfield Scott's army in some of the battles in Mexico. They were the first regiment to storm the gates of Mexico confronting Santa Anna himself. The flag of the regiment was the first flag to be raised over Mexico City."

- Vera Cruz The Palmetto Regiment lands at Vera Cruz and marches toward Mexico City.
- Contreras The Regiment skirmishes with Mexican Lancers.
- Churubosco The Regiment assaults and overruns Mexican trenches under heavy fire. Regiment Commander Colonel Pierce M. Butler is killed during the assault.
- Chapultepec The Regiment fights their way up the steep side of the hill to the summit to assault the Citadel.
- Gaita de Belen The Palmetto Regiment along with Smith's Rifle Regiment storm the gates of Mexico City in the face of devastating cannon and musketry. The first flag to fly over Mexico City was the regimental flag of the Palmetto Regiment. The City falls to Scott's forces.
