Carolina English Teacher, 1996-97

Dedication

Dr. Eve Coleman
1947-1994

This issue of Carolina English Teacher is dedicated to a consummate teacher: Eve Coleman. From her days as a high school English teacher to her work as a college teacher of teachers-to-be, Eve was an inspiration. Her love of her profession was contagious, and her students' lives were enriched as they were caught up in her zest for life and English language arts. Out of the classroom, her career was highlighted by her presidency of the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English. The National Council of Teachers of English also appreciated Eve's organizational skills as she planned two successful conferences in Charleston for the group.

Her love of her family—husband Alan and daughter Jennifer (with Eve in the photograph above—was obvious, for they were always first in her life. From the time Jennifer started school, Eve volunteered in her classroom and brought books and the writing process to life for many of Charleston's children. Even after she was no longer able to teach, Eve worked with Jennifer's high school English class.

Eve Coleman's story continues today in the classrooms of those she instructed or worked with, and this dedication is a thank you to the memory of a friend and colleague.
