When English settlers came to the area, they entered the territory of a powerful tribe, the Yemassee Indians. The two groups were able to worked together and live harmoniously for a period. This peace came to an abrupt end in 1715 when the Yemassee and other native tribes rose against the British and the unfair treatment the Indians became subject to. The uprising becomes known as the Yemassee War.

Today, Yemassee's town center is located in Hampton County, although a small portion of Yemassee lies in Beaufort County.
