The small Darlington County community of Lydia got its name from Lydia Josey Nesmith who was originally from the Lee County community of Turkey Creek. Her brother, who farmed the area, donated the land for the post office and named it for his favorite sister. Lydia is unincorporated; the nearest city is Hartsville. Residents of Lydia are called Lydians. (Special thanks to Bruce Nesmith King for sharing this info.)
