During the Depression, Congress established the Public Works Administration in 1933 to help with unemployment. Greenwood County's application was approved and funds distributed to build Buzzard's Roost Dam and a power plant along the Saluda River. More than 250 parcels of land were acquired for this project. Lake Greenwood neared capacity in the summer of 1940 providing to this day water recreation, electricity and water supply for all to enjoy. Lake Greenwood is the major dividing line between Greenwood County and Laurens County and extends south into Newberry County.
