Irmo, South Carolina
South Carolina Lexington County Irmo
Irmo is located in Lexington County about 10 miles northwest of Columbia.
In the late 1800s Irmo was a thriving community next to new railroad tracks that ran along the high ridge between the Broad and Saluda Rivers. The town's name was formed by combining the first two letters of the names of two railroad company men – C. J. Iredell and H. C. Moseley.
Irmo is known for the Okra Strut, a festival the town has hosted each fall since 1973. Initially the purpose of the Okra Strut was to raise money for a library and that goal was achieved in 1980. Today, funds raised by the festival are returned to the community through civic and school organizations, scholarships, and improvements of public areas.
