The City of Greer straddles the boundary line of Greenville County and Spartanburg County. It is located just off I-85 between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1873, the Atlanta Charlotte Air Line Railroad established Greer Station and a bustling business district quickly grew up around the depot. in 1901, two new railroads, Southern Railways and Piedmont and Northern, constructed competing rail lines through the town. Commercial activity eventually focused between the two tracks as businesses sought to have easy access to transportation for their products.
As other industries' fortunes ebbed and flowed over the years, Greer thrived as a transportation and business center for all of them. Initially, Greer's trains moved South Carolina's Upstate peaches and cotton to markets throughout the southeast. In the early 20th century, the trains transported raw materials in, and finished goods out, of hundreds of textile mills in the surrounding counties.
Greer remains a center of business in the Upstate region today. The main headquarters for Michelin North America is located here as is the nation's only BMW manufacturing plant.
