During the Great Depression, one Cottageville couple who lost their savings sold camellia plants to stay afloat. In memory of their resourceful spirit, Cottageville adopted the camellia as its town flower and symbol. A camellia show is held each January to showcase and enjoy the loveliest examples of the year's blooms.
