Central began with the arrival of the Atlantic & Richmond Air-Line Railroad Company. On September 28, 1873, the connecting link of the line that extended north from Atlanta and south from Charlotte was completed. Since this link was located halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte – 133 miles from each – they decided to call it Central. Central is located in Pickens County.
