Bethune is located in eastern Kershaw County, about 45 miles north of Sumter. When Europeans came to this area in the early 1800s, it was inhabited by Kadapaw Indians.
Bethune was originally called Lynchwood, and a post office was established there in 1828. However, when the railroad came to Lynchwood, the right-of-way passed though the property of Daniel Murdock Bethune and when the town was chartered in 1900, its name was changed from Lynchwood to Bethune.
